Jobs in the Chocolate Industry You’ll Want to Have

Who doesn’t love chocolates? Whatever form it comes in, these sweet treats can definitely make anyone’s day. Give it to someone you love for V-day, as an apology gift, a thank you gesture, and for just about anything else. Chocolates just seem to be the answer to anything and everything…well almost.

And if you love to eat chocolates and want to make a career out of it too, you most definitely can! We have put together the different jobs in the chocolate industry that you’ll want to have.

Jobs in the chocolate industry

1. Chocolatier

This is an overall term for someone who makes chocolates or confections from chocolates. She can make chocolate truffles and chocolate bars or sculpt chocolates into different shapes and figures! The main responsibility of a chocolatier is to prepare the chocolate and carry out experiments to increase the aroma without affecting the flavour.

2. Chocolate sculptor

Now, if you have the skills in sculpting objects, put that to good use by becoming a chocolate sculptor! You are at the forefront of the presentation department as you make miniatures and various items from chocolates. Of course, this shouldn’t affect the taste since the chocolates you’ll be using have already been made.

3. Chocolate tester

This is not only the most ‘delicious’ chocolate job, but it is also the most lucrative one, especially in western countries. To be a chocolate tester, you need to have a high level of intuition because you need to understand the reaction of a chocolate when added with different ingredients for variety.  A tester defines a chocolate’s appearance, how quickly it melts in your mouth, and the ease of opening the package.

4. Chocolate chef

This type of chef is different from a chocolatier, but both jobs are closely associated. To be this chef, your job is to prepare food products using usual recipes with chocolates as among the ingredients. This may include making seasonal salads like chocolate-covered strawberries or truffles.

How to prepare for a job in the chocolate industry

Working in the chocolate industry may seem like an all-fun-all-day kind of job, and it is! However, like any other profession or career, you need to have the educational background and experience to make it into the field. Though each specific role has specific job descriptions, here are some helpful ways for you.

1. Have the passion for chocolates

You cannot successfully do something that you don’t love. So, begin with having the passion for chocolates. Do you like eating it? Do you just eat it and enjoy, or do you take the time to savour its taste, inhale its aroma, and feel its consistency in your mouth?

2. Have attention to detail

Whether you are a chocolatier or a chocolate sculptor, you need to pay close attention to every bit of detail about your work. The slightest deviations in the ingredients, tempering time, and storage can alter the chocolate’s overall taste. And when you work for a giant corporation, there is a brand and taste to live up to.

3. Earn a degree

If you think it’s just all about having a love for chocolates, then you’re mistaken. You need to get equipped by earning a degree in bakery and pastry arts. This course teaches you baking techniques, nutrition, food safety, equipment, and ingredients.

You can go to a chocolate training school where you can go through the different roles and do various tasks, including tempering, molding and storing, as well as crafting sweet bars and artisan bonbons.
