This course is a standard entry-level qualification for employment as a support worker in the mental health sector. This course will allow you to understand the diagnosis of clients, how to establish communication with clients, and help them with the recovery process. You will also be given the skills to provide an effective support structure for people at risk of suicide or self-harm. During this course, you will be provided with the skills and support techniques to effectively support clients and their families going through mental illness.

Enrolment in the program is for a maximum of 24 months. Students must aim to complete modules by the nominated completion date and as a minimum must demonstrate ongoing progression towards completion. Extension for assessment may be awarded at the trainer’s discretion.
To be assessed as competent in this qualification you must complete 80 hours of relevant supervised work placement. It is your responsibility to source your placement, however, we will assist where possible. Depending on where you undertake your placement you may also need to undergo a police check and will be required to meet the working with children checks in your state. We take a practical approach to this qualification allowing participants to gain hands-on practice in working with clients. As a trainee you will require access to individuals (friends or family members) to support your program by participating as the client in simulated sessions. Each simulation will need to be recorded and submitted as part of your assessment.
All students require computer or tablet with access to the Internet and a program that can open and edit Word documents (this does not have to be Microsoft Office).
This course is delivered via our online learning system You do not need to come to class, however, you will need to keep in contact with your Educator and attend phone and/or web meetings to complete some of the practical components of your course. Online learning allows you the flexibility of completing your course at your own pace, at times to suit work and other life commitments. You can work on your course at anytime, anywhere supported by your industry experienced Educator via telephone and email communication no matter where you are.
Distance learning allows you to have the same amount of convenience and flexibility as online or blended learning. The only difference is that instead of studying online, you will be studying via workbooks. Distance learning is perfect for students that prefer to have hard copy resources. Participants wishing to complete their qualification via distance instead of online will incur additional material and postage fees up to the value of $25.00 per unit.
If you have lots of experience and skills but no formal qualification you might want to consider Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL is a process whereby you demonstrate that you currently have the required skills and knowledge for particular units/qualifications within the industry that you are experienced.
