6 Interesting Cheese Facts That Will Make You Want to Have a Career in Cheese Service

If there’s one food that’s so hard to resist, it would have to be cheese. It’s got a plethora of flavours, aroma, and textures, and it comes in hundreds of varieties all over the world. Cheese provides nutrition in the form of vitamins and minerals while serving as a high-protein source for the body. In case you’re curious, this nutritious dairy product is made by adding bacteria or acid to milk from different farm animals, then processing it. The type of milk used has a huge impact on the cheese’s taste and texture.

Now, let’s put that aside and talk about some of the interesting facts about this product.

Interesting facts about cheese you may not know about

1. It’s been around since before written language did

You might think it’s just a new thing, but cheese has existed long before written language did. In Poland, ancient strainers were found, suggesting that the process dates back to at least 7,500 years ago. Not only that, but archaeologists have found murals in Egyptian tombs that show this art has been around some 4,000 years ago.

2. 10 pounds of milk = 1 pound of this dairy product

You might want to go slow with that because there might not be enough supply if you go at your current speed (kidding!). But seriously though, it takes 10 pounds of goat and cow milk or 6 pounds of sheep milk to make a single pound of this dairy product.

3. It aids in sleep problems

Having problems sleeping at night? Let cheese do its magic because it’s been found to aid in sleep problems. According to a study by the British Cheese Board in 2015, consuming 20 grams of cheese 30 minutes before bedtime gives you sounder sleep. Among the 200 participants, 72% slept very well every night with no one reporting having any nightmares.

4. Eat cheddar for celebrity dreams

Still related to the study above, participants reported dreaming about celebrities like Johnny Depp and Jordan after they ate cheddar cheese before bedtime. This is getting pretty interesting, isn’t it?

5. Mice don’t like to eat it

Many of us may have grown up thinking mice love eating our cheese (blame it on Tom and Gerry too!). However, the opposite is true. Mice prefer eating sweets and carbs though they’ll still eat it if it’s the only food around. Still, it’s not their preference.

6. Lactose intolerant? You can still enjoy it

I’ve known so many lactose-intolerant people who refuse to eat this dairy product because they believe they know what’s going to happen next. Good news! You can still eat it without rushing to the washroom if you limit that to aged cheeses because they have less lactose. Think about Camembert, Brie, Gouda, provolone, Parmesan, Swiss, and cheddar.
